Wilkins Green

This is a project close to my heart. A community garden located in the centre of the Innerwest of Sydney within a school my children attend. A grant of $8000 was awarded from Hurlstone Park RSL to provide an amenity block with a dry compost toilet. The budget needed to include the cost of the compost toilet, application to Council for a septic system, all design documentation, project management, materials and labour to complete the project. With the dedicated commitment of a group of parents and sponsors, we were also able to provide a deck with toilet facilities, including a small kitchenette to the design. Several weekends of construction resulted in a space that has meant that classes spend longer in the garden and other activities can use the space with the provision of a kitchenette. We worked with the Hemp masonry company in designing a layout that could be used for their training workshop. They needed a site and in return, the school was left with the constructed hempcrete walls. There is no electricity or sewer connection on site.

Recycled materials were used wherever we could including:

  • Formwork from the hempcrete walls used for cladding & shelving
  • Second hand Basin, sink, tapware and bathroom door was sourced
  • Marble benchtop and joinery were reused from a kitchen renovation
  • The timber decking was discounted because it had been affected by the weather
