Nalawala Strawbale community hall
Built in the Fairfield showgrounds as a community hall on a site shared by a nursery and the home of the Western Sydney Cycling network offering bike maintenance to the public. Although not a residential build, workshops were run with Huff n puff constructions to home owners to learn how to build with straw bales and both mud render and lime render were used. The projects sustainability features include:- solar hot water, PV panels, rain water tanks, black water system, the concrete slab was constructed using 95% recycled aggregate, a second hand kitchen was incorporated, telegraph poles were used for the structure in the patio, louvers assist cross ventilation and no additional cooling is required in summer. The location of the office allows for great winter sun.
